Nantell, 48, was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison for not stopping an assault on a handcuffed inmate and lying about the incident to the FBI, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Nantell was convicted after a four-day trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Six other officers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/six-former-kentucky-state-corrections-officers-sentenced-violating-civil-rights-inmate-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously pleaded guilty<\/a> and were sentenced for their roles in the assault and cover-up, and three of those officers testified for the government at trial, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During a routine prisoner escort at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex (EKCC), Sergeant Nantell witnessed a brutal assault that would later become the focus of a significant investigation, officials state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1057 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Justice-Depart.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Nantell was supervising when three officers, including two from the prison&#8217;s internal affairs department, attacked a non-violent inmate who was lying face-down in a shower cell, handcuffed, and shackled. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The inmate was defenseless as the officers repeatedly punched and kicked him in the head and back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Nantell stood at the shower door, watching the savage beating for over 20 seconds before walking away, leaving the officers to continue their assault. The inmate, who had been completely restrained, suffered the brutal attack without any provocation or means of defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The inmate reported the incident within hours, prompting an immediate investigation by EKCC supervisors and the Kentucky State Police.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Instead of coming clean, Nantell participated in a cover-up, lying to investigators from both agencies and a special agent of the FBI in an attempt to conceal the truth about the vicious attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"field-formatter--text-default field-text-format--wysiwyg text-formatted field_body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cAs the vicious beating of a handcuffed, leg-shackled inmate unfolded, this defendant failed to intervene to stop the assault and then abused his power by obstructing the investigation into the crime,\u201d said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division. \u201cThis cover-up scheme failed. All seven officers who participated in the brutal assault of the inmate or the coordinated cover-up that followed have been brought to justice.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cInstead of\u00a0protecting someone\u00a0in his custody and care\u00a0or\u00a0supervising\u00a0others\u00a0under\u00a0his command, he turned a\u00a0blind\u00a0eye\u00a0to a\u00a0brutal\u00a0beating\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0tried to cover it up,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Carlton S. Shier IV for the Eastern District of Kentucky. \u201cThat\u2019s not law enforcement; that\u2019s\u00a0disgraceful\u00a0criminal conduct.\u00a0Fortunately, he now faces the consequences of his\u00a0utter\u00a0betrayal of\u00a0responsibility and callous\u00a0attempts\u00a0to\u00a0undermine\u00a0genuine\u00a0law enforcement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cIn this case, one inmate was betrayed by no less than seven corrections officers whose basic duty was to protect the civil rights of all the inmates under their supervision,\u201d said Special Agent in Charge Michael E.
