{"id":56922,"date":"2024-07-02T19:14:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T02:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=56922"},"modified":"2024-07-03T15:43:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T22:43:12","slug":"a-mexican-citizen-was-sentenced-to-10-years-in-prison-for-his-role-in-human-smuggling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=56922","title":{"rendered":"A Mexican Citizen Was Sentenced to 10 years in Prison for His Role in Dangerous Human Smuggling Conspiracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5414 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/>A Mexican citizen was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for his role in a dangerous human smuggling conspiracy, officials stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Jesus Ernesto Dessens-Romero, 28, of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, received a sentence from U.S. District Judge John Hinderaker for the District of Arizona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In November 2023, Dessens-Romero was found guilty of multiple alien smuggling offenses by a jury, including conspiracy to transport and transport illegal aliens for profit and bringing in illegal aliens to the United States for profit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The jury also found that Dessens-Romero placed human life in jeopardy during and in relation to these offenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6373 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Homeland-Security-Investigations-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"A police officer's back with &quot;POLICE HSI&quot; text.\" width=\"401\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Homeland-Security-Investigations-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Homeland-Security-Investigations.jpg 458w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/>\u201cHuman smugglers profit from the exploitation of migrants and routinely expose them to violence, injury, and death,\u201d said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. \u201cToday\u2019s sentence shows the Justice Department will continue to hold accountable these smugglers and the criminal networks that abuse, exploit, or endanger migrants.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Evidence presented at trial established that Dessens-Romero was the human smuggling foot guide for five Mexican nationals who illegally crossed into the United States on or about Feb. 13, 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The group included three sisters \u2013 ages 23, 20, and 17 \u2013 and their family friend, age 16. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Dessens-Romero led the individuals under his care into the rugged and remote Huachuca Mountains near Fort Huachuca in southern Arizona. This route was perilous due to the lack of law enforcement presence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The group had limited food and water and suffered from serious weather conditions at night, including freezing temperatures and snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">By Feb. 15, 2021, the 23-year-old sister was in significant physical distress. She was unable to eat, walk, or follow simple commands. Dessens-Romero told the group that they were close enough to a traveled roadway where the sick woman could be found if the group left her behind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dessens-Romero did not call emergency services. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Instead, he located a higher-ground cell phone reception to call a transnational criminal smuggling organization. Dessens-Romero then led the rest of the group to Sierra Vista where they were picked up by unidentified co-conspirators and transported further into the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The family of the woman left behind contacted authorities on Feb. 16, 2021, to report a missing person. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Despite extensive search efforts by U.S. Border Patrol, military officials from Fort Huachuca, Cochise County Sheriff\u2019s Department, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), she was not located. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During this time, Dessens-Romero contacted the surviving sisters on behalf of the smuggling organization to try to convince them to remove a \u201cmissing person\u201d social media post. In the months following, <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">HSI worked collaboratively with SOS B\u00fasqueda y Rescate, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding missing migrants, to continue searching for the missing woman. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">On Nov. 20, 2021, members of SOS B\u00fasqueda y Rescate located skeletal remains in an isolated area of the Huachuca Mountains, on Fort Huachuca property. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dental records confirmed that the remains belonged to the missing 23-year-old sister. The deceased is survived by her husband and daughter, according to authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">At trial, additional evidence confirmed that Dessens-Romero continued to smuggle undocumented non-citizens within the United States until June 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Dessens-Romero was arrested on June 30, 2021, by the Tennessee Highway Patrol while transporting two migrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The HSI Douglas Field Office investigated the case.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Mexican citizen was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for his role in a dangerous human smuggling conspiracy, officials stated.
