\"AA former manager at General Motors was sentenced Tuesday to 24 months in federal prison for conspiring to solicit and receive a $5 million bribe from a South Korean company, according to officials.<\/span><\/p>\n

In exchange for the bribe, Hyoung Nam So promised to deliver a contract worth more than $100 million for various car parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Andr\u00e9 Birotte Jr. sentenced Hyoung Nam So, 49, also known as “Brian So,” of Irvine, and ordered him to pay a $250,000 fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At the conclusion of a one-week trial in November 2023, a jury found So guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cCorporate executives must play by the same rules as the rest of us,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada. \u201cBy demanding millions of dollars in bribes to award contracts, this defendant corrupted the system and thumbed his nose at fair and honest business practices. Now, this defendant will do federal prison time and see firsthand that no person is above the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2015, a foreign parts supplier paid So a total of $3.45 million in cash. <\/span><\/p>\n

As a manager and team leader at General Motors (GM), So oversaw the supply of parts used to build interiors for GM automobiles in North America. <\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2015, So promised the contract, which was to be awarded through a competitive bidding process, to the owner of the South Korean parts company, Wookyung MIT, in exchange for $5 million, which So demanded in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following month, the owner of Wookyung MIT arranged to have $1 million in cash transferred from South Korea to Los Angeles through money brokers, which an accomplice then drove to Troy, Michigan, where So was then living. <\/span><\/p>\n

The owner of Wookyung MIT flew to Detroit in late November 2015 and personally delivered the cash to So during a meeting at a hotel in Troy.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the time So received the first $1 million installment of the bribe payment, he had already learned that Wookyung MIT was not the lowest bidder on the contract.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

So arranged for information to be provided to Wookyung MIT to allow it to revise its bid. <\/span><\/p>\n

On December 8, 2015, So recommended to GM executives that the contract be awarded to Wookyung MIT, and the contract was awarded to Wookyung MIT on the same day.<\/span><\/p>\n

So refrained from notifying Wookyung MIT that it had won the contract, and So withheld that information until Wookyung MIT\u2019s owner paid the remaining portion of the bribe.<\/span><\/p>\n

That occurred on December 20, 2015, when the owner of Wookyung MIT paid So $2.45 million in cash at a restaurant in Detroit\u2014cash that had also been driven from Los Angeles to Michigan. <\/span><\/p>\n

The following day, So arranged for Wookyung MIT to be informed that it had won the contract.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Homeland Security Investigations seized $3.19 million believed to be proceeds from the bribery scheme from a private vault in Los Altos in 2017, and HSI subsequently returned the money to South Korean authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The owner of Wookyung MIT was prosecuted in South Korea for offenses related to the bribery scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n

HSI\u2019s Los Angeles El Camino Real Financial Crimes Task Force, a multi-agency task force comprised of federal and state investigators focused on financial crimes in Southern California, investigated the bribery scheme. <\/span><\/p>\n
