Selna sentenced John Abel Baca, 48, of Whittier, a 21-year veteran of the Inglewood Police Department and its union representative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Judge Selna also ordered Baca to pay a $40,000 fine and found that Baca abused his position of trust as a police officer and that his sales extended over a lengthy period beginning in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Baca pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one count of distribution of cocaine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Former Inglewood police officer pleads guilty to drug charges\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bYhHrQIcfHg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>(2023 News Report)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cThis defendant\u2014a veteran of the Inglewood Police Department\u2014abused his position as a law enforcement officer to promote his drug trafficking activities,\u201d said United States Attorney Martin Estrada. \u201cI thank IPD for its cooperation in bringing the defendant to justice\u2014someone who broke his oath to protect the public.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3918 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png\" alt=\"Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Operating One of the Largest Synthetic Drug Smuggling Rings\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Department-of-Justice.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cFormer officer Baca tarnished the badge and dishonored the majority of those who serve and protect our communities with integrity,\u201d said Akil Davis, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI&#8217;s Los Angeles Field Office. \u201cThis case serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and corruption and criminal behavior will not be tolerated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Baca distributed cocaine on two occasions, the first in April 2021, when he delivered cocaine to a buyer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Baca then delivered approximately one kilogram of cocaine to the same buyer during another meeting in May 2021, in exchange for $22,000 in cash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In February 2021, the buyer informed the FBI that Baca, then an active-duty IPD officer, previously had offered to sell the buyer one kilogram of cocaine, two kilograms of \u201cWhite China\u201d heroin, and an unlimited supply of black tar heroin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The buyer reported that Baca claimed to have stolen drugs and cash during routine traffic stops that Baca made as a drug task force officer with IPD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During a secretly recorded meeting in late April 2021, Baca provided a sample of the cocaine to the buyer to provide to purported buyers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During that meeting, Baca also offered to sell the buyer a kilogram of \u201cChina White\u201d heroin for $10,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Several days later, Baca negotiated the price for one kilogram of cocaine\u2014$22,000 in cash \u2013 and then delivered a brick of cocaine to the buyer\u2019s workplace on May 4, 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Later the same day, Baca collected $22,000 in cash from the CW\u2019s residence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The FBI investigated this matter. The Inglewood Police Department provided its full cooperation during the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv6694060728MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section&#8217;s assistant U.S. attorney, Cassie D.
