Sim\u00f3n Hern\u00e1ndez,\u201d \u201cAndres,\u201d and \u201cEl Palatero,\u201d 41, of South Los Angeles;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Jose Jaime Garcia, a.k.a. \u201cPablo\u201d and \u201cSneaky,\u201d 20, of San Jacinto;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Gabriel Michel Becerra, a.k.a. \u201cSteven\u201d, 22, of Palmdale; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Jose Alfredo Moreno Gonzalez, 21, of Oak Hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29089 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Los-Angeles-Police-Department-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" \/>Avila, Salmeron, Garcia, and Becerra also are charged with two counts of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by extortion and attempted interference with commerce by extortion (Hobbs Act).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Four defendants have been arraigned and have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. Salmeron, Garcia, and Moreno are scheduled to go on trial on October 1. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Avila has an October 29 trial date scheduled. A federal magistrate judge has ordered Avila and Salmeron jailed without bond. Garcia and Moreno are free on bond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Becerra is currently a fugitive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cThese defendants allegedly preyed upon victims who sought to emigrate to our country by demanding ransom from the victims\u2019 families in exchange for their release,\u201d said United States Attorney Martin Estrada of the Central District of California. \u201cOur office is committed to ensuring that those who use violence to terrorize others face severe consequences for their actions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to the indictment, on March 21, 2023, Avila instructed Moreno to drive to a Chevron gas station in Chandler, Arizona. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Upon arrival, Moreno reportedly kidnapped four migrants and transported them to a restaurant in Burbank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Avila, along with Garcia and Becerra, then held the hostages in a house. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2310 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US_border_patrol2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US_border_patrol2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US_border_patrol2-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/US_border_patrol2.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Using a victim\u2019s cellphone, Avila demanded ransom money from the victim\u2019s family members in exchange for their release. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Avila then allegedly used another victim\u2019s cellphone to demand ransom payments, partially to an account in Mexico and partially to an account in the United States, from that victim\u2019s family member in exchange for the victim\u2019s release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">On March 22, 2023, Avila and Salmeron demanded ransom from another hostage\u2019s family member for their release. Inside the store, Avila body-slammed the victim, placed him in a chokehold, and punched him repeatedly in the face in an attempt to re-kidnap him.<\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Avila, Garcia, and Becerra then allegedly restrained one victim and another hostage by tying their hands, transported them to another house, and held them in a room, threatening them with violence if they attempted to escape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">On March 23, 2023, Avila, Garcia, and Becerra reportedly drove a victim to a gas station, where they took $11,000 in cash from the victim\u2019s brother in exchange for the victim\u2019s release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u201cHuman smuggling is a dangerous crime,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath of the Southern District of California. \u201cThese defendants will face justice for abusing vulnerable migrants for profit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">If convicted of all charges, each defendant faces up to life in federal prison. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Los Angeles Police Department are investigating this matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Offices for the Central District of California and Southern District of California are prosecuting this case jointly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8227731587MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Assistant United States Attorney Jena A.
