Garland. \u201cOur justice system depends on the ability of judges to make their decisions based on the law, and not on fear. Our democracy depends on the ability of public officials to do their jobs without fearing for their lives or the safety of their families.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Beginning on Jan. 4, Anastasiou\u2019s messages allegedly escalated to messages intending to threaten harm toward the victims. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The messages contained violent, racist, and homophobic rhetoric coupled with threats of assassination by torture, hanging, and firearms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Anastasiou faces 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce as well as nine counts of making threats against a federal judge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The defendant made his initial court appearance Wednesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kyle F. Reardon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">If convicted, Anastasiou faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each count of making threats against a federal judge and a maximum penalty of five years in prison for each count of making threats in interstate commerce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The Supreme Court of the U.S. Police Protective Intelligence Unit is investigating the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Assistant U.S. Attorney Will Taylor is prosecuting the case.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Alaska man was arrested this week in Anchorage for allegedly threatening to injure and kill six U.S. Supreme Court Justices and some of their family members, federal officials stated.
