MINNESOTA<\/strong> — The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the city of St. Anthony Village for refusing to allow a mosque to open in St. Anthony Business Center<\/p>\n

\u201cReligious freedom is one of our most cherished rights, and there are few aspects of that right more central than the ability of communities to establish places for collective worship,\u201d said Acting Assistant Attorney General Molly Moran.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The lawsuit filed under the\u00a0Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act is asking the court to allow the permit for \u00a0the Abu Huraira Islamic Center to open a mosque in St. Anthony Business Center<\/p>\n

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, alleges that the St. Anthony Village City Council treated an application for a conditional use permit to assemble in the St. Anthony Business Center filed by Abu Huraira on less than equal terms as other, non-religious, conditional use permits for assembly.<\/p>\n

There was speculation on whether the Justice Department would file a lawsuit.
