These threats prompted armed law enforcement responses to the homes of high-ranking government officials, religious centers, and private residences across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1142\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Szabo\u2019s actions, authorities said, were part of a calculated effort to harass, intimidate, and endanger. Anyone who hijacks police resources for senseless crimes like these will have to answer for their actions.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"flex items-center\">\n<div class=\"flex max-w-full flex-col grow\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"min-h-8 text-message relative flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 text-start break-words whitespace-normal [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"25668791-b014-4512-a44f-dbd4111b3bb1\" data-message-model-slug=\"gpt-4o\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden first:pt-[3px]\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose dark:prose-invert w-full break-words light\">\n<p title=\"\" data-start=\"117\" data-end=\"357\" data-speechifyplaybackhighlighter-highlight=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">According to court documents, Thomasz Szabo founded and led an online group that, starting in late 2020, launched a wave of bomb threats and \u201cswatting\u201d attacks\u2014false reports of violent emergencies intended to provoke armed police responses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"658\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As the ringleader, Szabo made direct threats to U.S. authorities, including a December 2020 claim of a mass shooting at New York synagogues and a January 2021 threat to bomb the U.S. Capitol and assassinate the President-elect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"359\" data-end=\"658\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">He publicly promoted these acts online and urged others to follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"1085\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Between December 24, 2023, and early January 2024, members of Szabo\u2019s network unleashed a spree of hoaxes targeting at least 25 members of Congress or their families, senior Executive Branch and law enforcement officials, members of the judiciary, 27 state officials, four houses of worship, and multiple journalists. <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"1085\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One member boasted to Szabo: \u201cI did 25+ swattings today&#8230; $500,000+ in taxpayers wasted in just two days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1293\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Szabo, extradited from Romania in November 2024, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and making threats involving explosives.
