<strong data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"856\">$12.95 million<\/strong> lost.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u2014 <strong data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"876\">MA:<\/strong> 507 victims \/ <strong data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"901\">$9.51 million<\/strong>\u00a0\u2022 <strong data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"911\">NH:<\/strong> 106 \/ <strong data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"928\">$1.65 million<\/strong>\u00a0\u2022 <strong data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"938\">ME:<\/strong> 98 \/ <strong data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"954\">$1.64 million<\/strong>\u00a0\u2022 <strong data-start=\"957\" data-end=\"964\">RI:<\/strong> 67 \/ <strong data-start=\"970\" data-end=\"980\">$0.15 million<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1004\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1004\">The FBI will never<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1336\">\n<li data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1100\">\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1100\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Call\/email to <strong data-start=\"1021\" data-end=\"1039\">demand payment<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1041\" data-end=\"1060\">threaten arrest<\/strong>, or seek <strong data-start=\"1070\" data-end=\"1097\">personal\/sensitive info<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1200\">\n<p data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1200\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Ask for <strong data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1148\">prepaid cards, wires, crypto ATMs<\/strong>, or to <strong data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1176\">liquidate assets<\/strong> (cash, gold, silver).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1264\">\n<p data-start=\"1203\" data-end=\"1264\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Ask you to spend your own money to \u201chelp catch a criminal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1336\">\n<p data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1336\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Call about \u201cfrozen\u201d Social Security numbers or surprise inheritances.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1352\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1352\">What to do<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1617\">\n<li data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1401\">\n<p data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1401\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1368\">Hang up.<\/strong> Do not pay. Do not share info.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1484\">\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1484\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1430\">Verify independently:<\/strong> look up the agency\u2019s official number and call back.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1539\">\n<p data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1539\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1502\">Report it:<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1514\">IC3.gov<\/strong> and your local police.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1617\">\n<p data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1617\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1558\">Warn others<\/strong>\u2014scammers prey on fear and speed; <strong data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1617\">slow down and verify.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Scams impersonating the FBI and other government agencies are a persistent problem and can also occur via email. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Common hallmarks of a scam email include misspellings, missing words, and incorrect grammar. Fraudulent emails may give the appearance of legitimacy by using pictures of the FBI Director and\/or the FBI seal and letterhead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">If you are a victim, call the FBI at <b>1-800-CALL-FBI<\/b>\u00a0or submit a tip at tips.fbi.gov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scammers are calling New Englanders while pretending to be the FBI or other agencies to extort money or steal personal data, officials announced last week.
