Federal Rule 11 or the Hyde Amendment:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The message is clear: the courtroom isn\u2019t a playground.<\/p>\n

Lawyers\u2014and even prosecutors\u2014risk fines and sanctions when they waste judicial resources for politics, harassment, or gamesmanship.<\/p>\n

Under Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure<\/strong>, courts can sanction lawyers who file claims for harassment, delay, or without a factual or legal basis.<\/p>\n

Judges also rely on 28 U.S.C. \u00a7 1927<\/strong>, which makes attorneys personally liable for costs if they \u201cunreasonably and vexatiously\u201d multiply proceedings. Beyond these, courts wield inherent authority<\/strong> to punish bad-faith conduct that abuses the judicial process.<\/p>\n

Even prosecutors can be hit. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Hyde Amendment<\/strong> (1997) allows courts to award attorney\u2019s fees to prevailing defendants if a prosecution is \u201cvexatious, frivolous, or in bad faith.\u201d It\u2019s rarely applied, but in United States v. Aisenberg<\/em>, the government was ordered to pay $2.9 million<\/strong> after a judge found the prosecution\u2019s case frivolous:<\/p>\n
