NEW YORK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"A dual Canadian\u2013American citizen, Stephanie Square, 52<\/strong>, of the Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation<\/strong>, made her initial court appearance last week in Plattsburgh, New York<\/strong>, after being extradited from Canada<\/strong> to face federal charges<\/strong> tied to a human smuggling conspiracy<\/strong> that killed a family of four, including two young children, in the St. Lawrence River<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A June 2024 federal indictment<\/strong> in the Northern District of New York<\/strong> charged Square with conspiracy to smuggle aliens<\/strong>, four counts of smuggling for profit<\/strong>, and four counts resulting in death<\/strong>.<\/span>
She was arrested in Canada in August 2024<\/strong>, and her extradition followed close cooperation between U.S. and Canadian law enforcement.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Timothy Oakes, 34<\/strong> (AMIR) \u2014 arrested June 15, 2025; detained pending trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Dakota Montour, 31<\/strong>, Kawisiiostha Celecia Sharrow, 43<\/strong>, and Janet Terrance, 45<\/strong> \u2014 all pleaded guilty between October 2024 and March 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    According to court filings, Square led an alien smuggling organization<\/strong> that moved people across the U.S.\u2013Canada border<\/strong> through Akwesasne.<\/span>
    In March 2023<\/strong>, she allegedly arranged to smuggle a Romanian family of four<\/strong> across the river despite dangerous weather<\/strong>.<\/span>
    Square recruited drivers, including Montour, to transport the family to Oakes\u2019s home on Cornwall Island<\/strong>, a known smuggling hub.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Late on March 29, 2023<\/strong>, residents heard cries for help<\/strong> on the river amid high winds<\/strong>. Square later told Montour to search the banks<\/strong> and then delete messages<\/strong>.<\/span>
    By March 31<\/strong>, authorities had recovered the bodies of the family and Oakes\u2019s light blue boat<\/strong>; the boat captain\u2019s body<\/strong> surfaced eight months later<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
