Prosecutors say those claims were false. Most investor funds were either lost in trading or diverted to repay earlier investors, a hallmark of a Ponzi scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"2160\" data-end=\"2447\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Authorities allege Mulliner persuaded victims \u2014 often family members, friends, and acquaintances \u2014 to buy shares in his company, sometimes using retirement savings. He allegedly sent fabricated account statements showing positive returns to attract new investors and prevent withdrawals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" title=\"\" data-start=\"2449\" data-end=\"2609\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Prosecutors also say Mulliner concealed a prior felony securities fraud conviction and used investor money to pay family members and pursue coastal real estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" title=\"\" data-start=\"2611\" data-end=\"2678\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">At least six victims lost approximately $290,000, authorities said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"2680\" data-end=\"2843\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">In a separate allegation, Mulliner is accused of stealing an $8,400 COVID-19 stimulus check in April 2021 and forging two victims\u2019 signatures before depositing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" title=\"\" data-start=\"2845\" data-end=\"3040\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">He faces charges including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and aggravated identity theft. If convicted, Mulliner could receive a sentence totaling decades in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" title=\"\" data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3123\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">The investigation was conducted by the <strong data-start=\"3081\" data-end=\"3122\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">FBI.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" title=\"\" data-start=\"3125\" data-end=\"3187\"><span
