{"id":60621,"date":"2026-03-17T12:54:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T19:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=60621"},"modified":"2026-03-17T12:54:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T19:54:12","slug":"ex-syrian-prison-chief-guilty-of-torture-lying-to-gain-u-s-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=60621","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Syrian Prison Chief Guilty of Torture, Lying to Gain U.S. Residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"452\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\"><strong data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"204\">LOS ANGELES\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"187\" data-end=\"452\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5414 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/U.S.-Department-of-Homeland-Security.jpg 584w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>A former Syrian prison chief and provincial governor under the regime of <strong data-start=\"278\" data-end=\"297\">Bashar al-Assad<\/strong> was convicted by a federal jury of <strong data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"433\">torturing detainees and lying to U.S. immigration authorities to gain entry and seek citizenship<\/strong>, prosecutors said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"722\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\"><strong data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"483\">Samir Ousman Alsheikh, 73<\/strong>, formerly of <strong data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"526\">Lexington, South Carolina<\/strong>, was found guilty following a <strong data-start=\"557\" data-end=\"583\">nine-day federal trial<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"721\">one count of conspiracy to commit torture, three counts of torture, immigration document fraud, and attempted naturalization fraud<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"US Federal Jury Indicted Syrian Prison Head with Torture\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gjeHAHGuXzg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"952\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Prosecutors said Alsheikh served as a <strong data-start=\"762\" data-end=\"852\">brigadier general in charge of Damascus Central Prison (Adra Prison) from 2005 to 2008<\/strong>, where he <strong data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"951\">ordered, directed, and personally participated in the torture of political detainees<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"1132\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Evidence showed prisoners were sent to a notorious section known as <strong data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1036\">\u201cWing 13,\u201d<\/strong> where they were <strong data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1131\">held in isolation and subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1468\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Victims testified they were <strong data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1228\">suspended by their wrists from ceilings and beaten with cables<\/strong>, sometimes for days. Others described being tortured on devices known as the <strong data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1325\">\u201cMagic Carpet,\u201d<\/strong> which bent victims\u2019 bodies to cause <strong data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1389\">extreme pain and injury<\/strong>. One victim said Alsheikh <strong data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1467\">personally stepped on the device during torture<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1735\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Following his prison tenure, Alsheikh became <strong data-start=\"1515\" data-end=\"1560\">governor of Deir Ez-Zour province in 2011<\/strong>. Prosecutors said he later <strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1633\">concealed his role in human rights abuses<\/strong> when applying for a <strong data-start=\"1654\" data-end=\"1675\">U.S. visa in 2018<\/strong>, entering the country in <strong data-start=\"1701\" data-end=\"1709\">2020<\/strong>, and seeking citizenship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1849\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Authorities arrested him in <strong data-start=\"1765\" data-end=\"1778\">July 2024<\/strong>, and he has remained in <strong data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"1837\">federal custody in Los Angeles<\/strong> since then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1965\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Federal officials said the case underscores that the United States <strong data-start=\"1918\" data-end=\"1965\">\u201cis not a refuge for human rights abusers.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"2177\"><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">Alsheikh now faces <strong data-start=\"1986\" data-end=\"2044\">up to 20 years in prison on each torture-related count<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2100\">up to 10 years on each immigration fraud charge<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2140\">U.S. District Judge Hern\u00e1n D.
