BROOKLYN, N.Y.<\/strong> \u2014 Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garc\u00eda<\/strong>, 76, of Sinaloa, Mexico<\/strong>, was sentenced Monday to life in federal prison<\/strong> and ordered to forfeit $15 billion<\/strong> after admitting he led the Sinaloa Cartel<\/strong>, one of the world’s most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations, officials stated.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Zambada Garc\u00eda pleaded guilty to serving as the principal leader of a continuing criminal enterprise<\/strong> and to a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO)<\/strong> charge after multiple federal cases were consolidated under a plea agreement in New York<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors said Zambada Garc\u00eda spent nearly four decades directing the cartel’s trafficking of tons of fentanyl, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine<\/strong> into the United States while overseeing a criminal organization that relied on murder, intimidation, corruption and bribery<\/strong> to protect its operations.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ismael Zambada Garcia spent nearly four decades poisoning American communities to make billions of dollars in profit and ordering the murders of anyone who stood in his way.     What began primarily as a cocaine-smuggling<\/strong> operation evolved into a sprawling criminal enterprise that also manufactured and distributed fentanyl<\/strong>, with prosecutors alleging the cartel imported precursor chemicals from China<\/strong>, produced the synthetic opioid in laboratories across Mexico and trafficked it into the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n
