\"\"LAREDO, Texas \u2014<\/strong> A 19-year-old Mexican national pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges stemming from a human smuggling operation that ended when an SUV crashed into a utility pole, killing two migrants.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gerardo David Zarate Martinez pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport migrants resulting in death and bringing three migrants into the United States for financial gain, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Southern District of Texas<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zarate Martinez admitted participating in the smuggling operation in exchange for payment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Law enforcement officers encountered a white SUV in Laredo on Jan. 8 and suspected it was being used to smuggle people, prosecutors said. As authorities followed the vehicle, its juvenile driver accelerated, ran several red lights and crashed into a utility pole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Officers found two unresponsive migrants in the rear of the SUV. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of his guilty plea, Zarate Martinez admitted that a person in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, offered to pay him to guide a group of migrants farther into the United States after they crossed the Rio Grande.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The juvenile drove the SUV while Zarate Martinez sat in the passenger seat. Both attempted to flee after the crash, prosecutors said.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga accepted Zarate Martinez\u2019s plea and scheduled sentencing for Nov. 10. He faces up to life in federal prison and a possible $250,000 fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sentence will be determined by the court after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zarate Martinez remains in federal custody pending sentencing.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u2019s Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew P. Hakala-Finch is prosecuting the case.<\/span><\/p>\n
