\"\"URBANA, Ill. \u2014<\/strong> A Danville drug dealer was sentenced to life in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine and other drugs in a conspiracy that caused one fatal overdose and left another victim seriously injured.<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce sentenced Marcus \u201cSlim\u201d McKinney, 50, on Aug. 14 to three life terms without parole on drug trafficking charges. <\/span><\/p>\n

McKinney also received a 40-year sentence on another trafficking charge and 20-year terms for maintaining drug-involved premises, obstruction of justice and witness tampering.<\/span><\/p>\n

A federal jury convicted McKinney in November 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prosecutors said McKinney began distributing crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl shortly after the Federal Bureau of Prisons released him to home confinement in Danville on April 6, 2023. He was wearing an ankle monitor at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\"\"During the weekend of April 15, 2023, McKinney gave an opioid to a woman after falsely telling her the substance contained only cocaine, according to trial evidence. The woman survived after Danville firefighters and paramedics administered naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three other people overdosed on drugs supplied by McKinney that weekend, including one person who died, prosecutors said.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Aug. 19, 2023, McKinney gave Maggie Avelar a mixture of methamphetamine and fentanyl that he called a \u201cHot Shot.\u201d Avelar died at McKinney\u2019s Kentucky Avenue residence in Danville.<\/span><\/p>\n

A surveillance system seized from the home recorded McKinney and his brother, James \u201cBrownski\u201d Young, discussing a plan to mislead police about Avelar\u2019s death. Young was previously sentenced to 68 months in prison for obstruction and drug trafficking.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"goldMcKinney continued trafficking drugs after he was transferred to a Springfield halfway house for violating the conditions of his home confinement. On June 20, 2024, he distributed more than a pound of methamphetamine to a Drug Enforcement Administration confidential source, prosecutors said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Six days later, DEA agents seized more than 2 pounds of methamphetamine and over 5 kilograms of cocaine from Springfield storage units linked to McKinney.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jurors also convicted McKinney of witness tampering after he wrote to a potential witness in January 2025 and urged her to falsely claim that other witnesses were lying about his drug activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

McKinney had five previous felony drug trafficking convictions, including two federal convictions. He was still serving an eight-year federal drug sentence when he committed the latest offenses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bruce ruled that a life sentence was mandatory because of McKinney\u2019s prior convictions and the jury\u2019s findings that drugs he distributed caused death and serious bodily injury.<\/span><\/p>\n
