{"id":61927,"date":"2026-10-05T16:17:38","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T23:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=61927"},"modified":"2026-10-05T16:17:38","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T23:17:38","slug":"california-woman-arrested-at-lax-accused-of-spying-for-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/?p=61927","title":{"rendered":"California Woman Arrested at LAX, Accused of Spying for China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\"><strong>LOS ANGELES<\/strong> \u2014 An Irvine woman was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport on a federal complaint accusing her of working as an unregistered agent of China and surveilling relatives of a senior Taiwanese government official, officials announced Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">Wanying Zhang, 34, also known as Heather Zhang, was preparing to board a flight to China, the Justice Department said Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\"> If convicted, Zhang faces up to 10 years in federal prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">Zhang is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Feds: Irvine real-estate agent arrested at LAX a Chinese spy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lS3cnql3boU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">According to the complaint, Zhang worked under the direction of Chinese government officials from June through September 2025 without notifying the U.S. attorney general, as federal law requires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">Prosecutors allege she traveled to China in June 2025, met with government officials and received instructions to conduct surveillance of the official\u2019s relatives in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6759 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice-90x60.jpg 90w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Department-of-Justice.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/>On Aug. 29, 2025, Zhang and another person flew from Orange County\u2019s John Wayne Airport to Las Vegas. Three days later, they flew to the state where a targeted relative lived, rented a car and drove to the relative\u2019s home, according to the complaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">Zhang allegedly sent a Chinese official a photograph of her boarding pass, then reported seeing a young man at the residence. When the official requested an audio call, she replied that she was recording video.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 25px;\">She also sent the official license plate numbers for two vehicles
