I learned so much from that Irishman\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 a newspaper reporter who spoke fluent Spanish, loved his tequila and said rosaries for the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Kenny covered stories on both sides of the border \u2014 El Paso and Ju\u00e1rez. I remember going to Ju\u00e1rez with him. Everybody seemed to know him. He\u2019d walk into a room, and the corners of people\u2019s mouths would turn up. Followed by:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Sennnnior, Fleeeen! Que onda?&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">That was Kenny. He didn\u2019t have to announce himself. The smiles did it for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Well, here is the column I wrote ten years ago about the Irishman. He\u00a0had four decades of newspaper reporting under his belt, and he was a good friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Ken Flynn was also a deacon in the Catholic Church, and it wasn\u2019t unusual that after he left the newsroom, he would go do the rosary service at a funeral. He did dozens and dozens of baptisms, funerals and marriages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I would tease him, and say, \u201cWow, what a racket you have going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">He would burst out laughing. But I knew Kenny loved people, loved his church and his big heart only rivaled his sense of humor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">There were so many memories I shared with \u201cThe Deacon\u201d and almost all were spawned when we worked together at the <strong>now-closed El Paso Herald-Post newsroom.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">But the one memory that sticks out is when he sat at a barstool next to me at \u00a0<strong>La Kumbala Bar on Alameda Street<\/strong> in El Paso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Ken and I went to the Mex-Tex bar the weekend after \u00a0five execution-style, murders happened there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10814 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/newspapers-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A stack of newspapers on a white background.\" width=\"399\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/newspapers-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/newspapers-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/cjnotebook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/newspapers.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/>On Friday night, we were off the clock but wondering who would show up at the very large dance nightclub after these five employees were taken to a back office after closing hours and each one shot in the back of the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Usually, on Fridays, the place was packed with blue-collar workers but there were less than a dozen people including waitresses and bartenders when we arrived.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Ken and I soon had a buzz going. I sipped Corona beers. He drank tequila and mix drinks. There was a waitress sitting at a corner bar stool. Business was so slow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I jokingly said, \u201cGo dance with her, Kenny, and pump her for some information about the owners.\u201d He said, \u201cThink I should?\u201d I said, \u201cHell, yeah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">He laughed. His laughter was always suspended somewhere between a chuckle and muffled laughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I didn\u2019t think he would dance with anyone at the bar, much less the waitress. But I knew he loved to dance. He was Old School rock \u2018n roll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I ordered another round. He got up, and I thought he was going to the restroom, but next thing I know, he and the waitress were dancing to a Mexican<em> Cumbia.<\/em> \u00a0They were the only two on the dance floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">We ended up leaving there after a few drinks and after tag-teaming the bartenders and the waitress about what they knew about the murders and the owners. We didn\u2019t get much, very little. But we had a good time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">When we were leaving, walking out into the parking lot, I had a nice buzz going as Mexican music blared out the bar\u2019s doors and spilled into the nearly empty parking lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">As he walked away to get into his car, he said, \u201cI got a baptism tomorrow, Ruly. I hope I don\u2019t screw it up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I gave him a thumbs up and an alcohol-induced smile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">\u201cYou can do baptisms and funerals in your sleep. You won\u2019t f**k it up, Kenny.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">He laughed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">In 1997, the year the Herald-Post closed was the best year of my thirty-plus years as a journalist. \u00a0I worked with friends like Ken who were more like family. We even \u00a0went to lunch in groups like nuns and enjoyed each other\u2019s company, swapping \u201cwar stories,\u201d teasing each other and had occasional bitch sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Sometimes, we\u2019d hit the downtown watering holes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">We loved to trounce the competition. It was fun going to work because I was going to be with my family. I didn\u2019t mind the long hours, going to work before the sun came up and coming home long after it had set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">My Herald-Post family knew that our days were numbered, the closure rumors and the circulation bottomline were evident that time was running out. We would soon close our doors. \u00a0So we worked harder at beating the bushes while making up the rules along the way and rattling management cages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Assistant City Editor Kenny proudly grinned and summed it up best: \u201cThe inmates are running the asylum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I loved listening to Kenny about his early days in journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">He once interviewed Martin Luther King Jr. at the civil rights leader\u2019s house in 1957 as a cub reporter assigned with the UPI bureau in Montgomery Alabama.\u00a0He covered the bus boycotts and the church bombings in Montgomery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Kenny was fluent in Spanish, and was once the El Paso president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the nation\u2019s largest Hispanic civil rights group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Two years before he died, Kenny said he could no longer take care of his ailing wife, Margarita, whom he had met in Chihuahua. He had to put her in a nursing home and confided that it was hard for him to do so because she kept begging him to take her home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">With his voice cracking a bit with emotion, he said \u201cI can\u2019t take care of her anymore, Ruly.\u201d \u00a0But he said it hurts, especially when he was leaving the nursing home. He visited his bride every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">When Margarita died, Kenny seemed to have lost his reason for living. I told him to write a book about all those years as a newspaper man, go out for a walk and get out of the house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">I tried to encourage him, telling him that there are many people who would love to read about those early newsroom days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">When I found out that he had died, I was sad for a while and later smiled and then, I laughed when I remember that dance that night at the Kumbala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Rest in Peace, my friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I posted the column below more than 10 years ago, it hit home.
