OXNARD, CALIFORNIA<\/strong> — An internal administrative investigation continues surrounding allegations against some Oxnard \u00a0Police Department officers who allegedly have \u00a0so-called shooting tattoos \u00a0put on their left shoulders after they have been involved in shootings of suspects, according to the police department.<\/p>\n

As of last week, the investigation is still on-going, Miguel Lopez<\/strong>, spokesman for the Oxnard Police Department, stated Monday.<\/p>\n

A former Oxnard police officer told American Justice Notebook<\/strong> that smoke can be tattooed\u00a0to the barrel of the tattoo when the shooting is fatal.\u00a0He provided the names of nine officers who allegedly have \u201cearned\u201d these tattoos and have put them on their bodies – two are retired\u00a0and two of the officers are commanders with the Oxnard Police Department. \u00a0He also drew a picture of what these tattoos look like.<\/p>\n

Two of the officers named were involved in fatal shootings, in 1994 and 2001.<\/p>\n

The former Oxnard officer asked that his name not be used for fear of retaliation.<\/p>\n

In July, these names were provided to Police Chief Jeri Williams<\/strong>. \u00a0She downplayed the allegations, \u00a0saying the information provided to American Justice “sounds silly” and questioning the source who gave it to us.<\/p>\n

But the city of Oxnard hired the San Francisco law firm of \u00a0Renne Sloan Holtzman and Sakai<\/a>\u00a0 to conduct an independent investigation.<\/p>\n

In October, \u00a0Attorney Ron Bamieh<\/strong>, who is representing the family of 26-year-old Roberto Ramirez<\/strong> who died while in police custody in June 2012, said he had\u00a0seen one of these shooting tattoos on a police officer. Bamieh also said he has a photograph of the tattoo that is on another officer.<\/p>\n

Bamieh said the tattoos are apparently put on the left shoulders with \u201cpride\u201d and as a \u201cbadge of honor\u201d after a killing. He said the tattoos were “repulsive” and “disturbing.”<\/p>\n

The U.S. Justice Department spokesman declined to comment, saying they will review the matter.<\/p>\n

“I cannot give you a timetable as to how long our review will take,\u201d stated Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the Justice Department in an email in October.<\/p>\n
