Former Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy Rafael Munoz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

CHICAGO<\/strong>\u2014A former Cook County sheriff\u2019s deputy was sentenced Wednesday to one year in federal prison for forcibly pulling a jail inmate’s chain causing him to flip forward, hit his head and face on the concrete floor.<\/p>\n

As a result of using excessive force, the inmate suffered injuries, including a broken nose, a broken tooth, swelling, bruising, and bleeding from cuts to his lip and nose, officials said.<\/p>\n

The former deputy Rafael Munoz<\/strong> plead guilty to violating the civil rights of a man who was being held in the county\u2019s detention lockup facility in Maywood in 2010.<\/p>\n

Munoz admitted using unreasonable force.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened here was extremely serious,\u201d U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez<\/strong> said in imposing the sentence in U.S. District Court. Munoz was ordered to begin serving his sentence on Feb. 6 and was placed on supervised release for one year following his prison term.
