NEW YORK\u00a0<\/strong> – A former Buffalo police officer \u00a0who plead guilty in August to operating of marijuana grow of more than 100 plants \u00a0was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison, officials said.<\/p>\n

Jorge Melendez<\/strong>, 42, of Buffalo, \u00a0also faces a fine of up to $5 million. He is the second police officer to be convicted for growing marijuana, officials said.<\/p>\n

Officials said that while off-duty he ran his marijuana business.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge William Skretny<\/strong> \u00a0also ordered to pay a money judgement totaling $300,000, and forfeit a Suburban vehicle, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 36 foot speed boat, and seven firearms.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor all those who take an oath to uphold the law, there is nothing more egregious than to flout that sacred promise and become a criminal,\u201d said U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul.<\/strong> \u201cThis defendant\u2014while wearing the uniform of a police officer\u2014served as a drug dealer for two years. The defendant\u2019s actions have now cost him his liberty and property. They have not, however, reduced the high regard we have for those officers who continue to perform an outstanding job keeping all of us safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
