\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 LOS ANGELES<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 The leader of a burglary ring that targeted Post Offices and stole boxes full of mail was sentenced today to five years in federal prison, officials said Wednesday.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt <\/strong>sentenced Jose Manual Guerra,<\/strong> also known as \u201cTricky,\u201d 45, of Los Angeles, after\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Guerra pleaded guilty in September to postal burglary.<\/div>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0He \u00a0admitted that he used a crowbar to forcibly break into the North Torrance Post Office on Crenshaw Boulevard on October 24, 2013, with the intent to steal mail.<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 When he pleaded guilty, Guerra also admitted that he broke into at least two other Post Offices in the fall of 2013. Guerra may have been involved in five other burglaries, according to court documents.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities believe that Guerra learned he was wanted by law enforcement in connection with the postal burglaries and that he fled California to avoid arrest.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0In December 2013, he was arrested by Postal Inspectors. <\/span><\/div>\n
A search of his then-residence in New Mexico resulted in the recovery of checks, credit cards, various forms of identification all issued in the names of others, credit card statements, bank statements and other items sent through the mail. Some of the checks recovered had been washed and altered.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Postal burglary is a serious crime that causes harm to a wide range of victims, including the United States Postal Service and the individuals whose mail is stolen. Individual victims suffered losses of approximately $1,800 when their checks were altered and cashed by Guerra.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cToday’s sentence should send a clear message,\u201d said Acting Postal Inspector in Charge Adrian Gonzalez. \u201cThe Postal Inspection Service will not tolerate attacks on our facilities. Postal Inspectors will aggressively investigate these cases and bring the thieves to justice.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
