\"U.S.<\/a>RIVERSIDE, CALIF.<\/strong> \u2013 Two men were each sentenced Monday to 25 years in federal prison for helping to plot with al Qaeda and the Taliban to kill Americans, officials said.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Virginia A. Phillips<\/strong> sentenced\u00a0Sohiel Omar Kabir<\/strong>, 37, a naturalized United States citizen who was born in Afghanistan and who until late 2011 resided in Pomona; and\u00a0Ralph Deleon,<\/strong> 26, of Ontario, a lawful permanent resident and citizen of the Philippines.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0\u00a06\u00bd-week trial last summer, the jury convicted Kabir and Deleon for their role in a plot to travel overseas to fight against U.S. and Allied forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the jury convicted Kabir and Deleon of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and conspiring to murder U.S. military and government personnel.<\/p>\n

The jury also found Kabir guilty of conspiring to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, namely Al-Qa\u2019ida, and conspiring to receive military-type training from Al-Qa\u2019ida.<\/p>\n

In addition, the jury convicted Deleon of conspiring to murder, maim or kindap overseas.<\/p>\n

Two other defendants in the case \u2013 Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales<\/strong> and Arifeen David Gojali<\/strong> \u2013 previously pleaded guilty and are scheduled to be sentenced \u00a0on March 16.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis case demonstrates the need for vigilance and swift action to counter the false allure of violent extremism,\u201d said U.S. Attorney Stephanie Yonekura.<\/strong> \u201cWhen confronted with young Americans who succumbed to the empty promises of violent extremism and sought to assist a terrorist group in killing American soldiers abroad, law enforcement acted swiftly to eliminate the threat.\u201d<\/p>\n
